How to Determine Eligibility of a Grant?

Determining eligibility of a grant is not that difficult, although sometimes this process is a challenge. In some cases, the wording of grant recipient guidelines can be quite lengthy.

Eligibility for receipt of a grant might different vastly from one type to the next. For instance, educational grants might not have the same eligibility requirements as home improvement or community renovation grants.

However, a basic list of the criteria includes one or more of the following:

• You must be a certain age, gender, or race. This is not considered discrimination in the event it helps disadvantaged groups get ahead. For instances, often women are awarded money for business start-up costs.

• You must have proof of need, or you need to convince the government you have a plan of action. For instance, you may already be enrolled in school or you might have drafted up your community road improvement project proposal.

• In some cases, you must have achieved official non-profit status. This requires applying for and being accepted as a 5013C corporation. This is true in many instances, such as if you are interested in pursuing historical research or if you are dedicated to neighborhood renovation. Churches often receive this money, too.

• You must have a reason to apply. This could be (as mentioned earlier) personal need or it could be for the benefit of your community. The need may also be in the form of needing additional occupational training to help you advance your current career.

• Basic educational requirements might apply in some cases. For instance, receiving a college grant requires that you have graduated high school or equivalency program.

• Part of the plan drawn up to receive a grant might possibly require demonstration of willingness to give back to the community. This should be evident in the mission statement of your grant proposal if you are required to draw one up.

• Sometimes you might be required to demonstrate proficiency in a given area. For instance, if you want to receive an artistic grant you may need to show proof that you have potential in this area.

• To receive some forms of personal assistance you might only be able to obtain that help if you have children. This is often true in the event you are applying for medical care.
