Grants can be approved and given out by a number of different ways such as through:

• Not for profit organisations
• Government departments

However federal government grants refer to receiving finances in the form of funding from government organisations or departments. The greater majority of the funding allocated is done so by the government and its various departments with the rest coming from public/ private trusts with social, economic, or environmental interests.

Where does the large majority of grant funding go?

Most of the federal government grants money goes straight back into the educational system. The large majority or funding given out by the government is for post-secondary students wishing to achieve higher education and wishing to pay for it without having huge loans with interest. The government funding also extends to offering ongoing financial assistance to students in the forms of allowances. This appears in the students account as if wages would on a weekly basis for students to have access to for goods and services. This helps t maintain the student and assist in sustaining the student while the timely period of studying is taking place.

Types of Federal Government Grants Available

There are many different types of federal government grants for many different purposes. Some of those purposes include:

• Block grants
• Earmark grants
• Categorical grants
• Formula grants
• Project grants

These are the main types of grants the government has in place to assist with society’s needs for funding for smaller scale and sometimes large scale projects. Block grants are all considered to be formula grants and are generally used for a one off funding project which has asked for some financial aid such as a drug abuse seminar or a mental health awareness classes and so on.

Formula grants refer to government policy and assisting with enforcing that in the forms of grants for example social welfare services and families who need financial aid.

Categorical grants exist under a strict criteria and maybe used narrowly for exclusive projects with defined purposed. Quite often with grants falling under this category the successful applicant will need to but up the amount of money first it wish to receive from the government then the government matches it, doubling the money of the applicant.
