Eight Common Misconceptions about Government Grants

Proving that you need a government grant is often hard work. It also requires additional commitments on the form of the recipient. This dispels the theory that the government just dishes out free money to everyone.

The following misconceptions pertaining to government grants include the following:

1. That the receipt of a grant is nothing but a free ride: Nothing could be further from the truth. If you are applying for an educational grant you need to prove that you are eligible for higher education. If you want to receive money for a good cause you need to prove that it will benefit your community. The list of requirements goes on and on.

2. Being awarded a grant is easy: No, it is not. It requires a lengthy application and selection process. It also requires in some cases having a plan. Even if it is just to apply for persona assistance proving need may require some work. By the time you do, you may not even need that help any more.

3. Anyone can receive them: That is not true. The criterion to receive a particular grant is individualized. Sometimes it requires being of a certain age range, having a child, or being an official non-profit organization. Not everyone can get every grant offered.

4. You can receive money to purchase a car, house, etc.: No money is offered for these purposes directly. You could however apply for low-interest loans and grants to help improve a low income or depressed neighborhood. You might be able to receive money to start or run a business in these areas as well.

5. You never have to pay grants back: In theory that is true. However, if you fail to follow through with the expectations or you violate any guidelines pertaining to the implementation of the money received you could be in trouble. You may be required to pay the money back and you might also reduce opportunities to receive additional funding.

6. Applying for one is a waste of time: It is not if you have read through the grant eligibility material. Furthermore, if you have asked the proper authorities the right questions throughout the process you should stand a better chance of knowing you will receive it.

7. Middle class students cannot receive funding for school: Although in some cases it may be more difficult to receive scholarships. However, they may still be eligible for certain government grants.

8. They are nothing but scams: Some people might not even think that government grants exist. This is not true, as people apply for them every single day for a variety of reasons. They just cannot be used or applied simple to fund luxuries but the receipt of the money is for a specific purpose, such as self-improvement or helping the community.
