Steps to Applying for Government Grants

Contrary to what books and TV advertisements say, the truth is that the U.S. government is not giving away free money. This money is only offered in the event it is needed, such as for community improvement or for job training and education.

This is essentially what you need to do to apply for a grant:

• Find out what ones are available. This will help you save time as not everyone is qualified for every grant. Some are based on need while others are awarded according to talents, abilities, and aptitude. Yet others are given because the individual has a specific purpose.

• Read the eligibility materials and if you have any questions, ask the appropriate authorities. Asking a few simple questions and seeing if you are for sure eligible will help you take advantage of all opportunities. It will also further prevent you from wasting time applying for grants you are not eligible to receive.

• Fill out the paper or online application accurately. Beware that in doing so any false or misleading information will get you in big trouble. It could result in lost and/or repayment of funds or even jail time. Be careful to understand the consequences of perjury in this case.

• Provide proof of income or other personal information requested by grantor. This will help determined need or purpose. It will also ensure the money is sent to the right person. It will also determine how much money is needed in the event more than one award is available.

• Create a proposal, which usually would be required for local or statewide improvement projects. This detailed proposal would include a plan of action, budget, mission statement, and lists of goals and objectives. Of course, this plan should be properly organized and free of grammar and spelling errors. Doing so will further help prove that you have a clearly defined plan.

• Make sure you attend all meetings leading up to possible awarding of a grant. Missed meetings might indicate you are irresponsible, with the exception being sickness or emergency. Be careful to show up to all scheduled meetings as much as possible.

Many federal grants are awarded to worthy causes that implement much-needed projects that would most benefit a particular location or region. For instance, possibly groups of people want to assist in highway litter cleanup or flood control. .

No matter how little or large of the amount of funds you receive from the government you are required to put in some type of time or effort in order to receive it. You might also be necessary for you to prove that you need it and that you will use it wisely.

Sometimes if the money is requested to fund a public project proof of a 5013c status is required. This is documentation issued by the IRS which makes you exempt from taxes.

Writing, filming, and artistic projects might also be funded as well. These as well as educational grants are often endowed to individuals.
