Types of Government Grants
Government Grants are issued for many reasons. The criteria for receiving these are quite different, and often depend largely on the grant requested. It is up to you to know the expectations before you apply.
Government grants are offered in a variety of categories such as the following:
Education Often people receive these when they attend a four-year college. Usually public schools are funded but sometimes private schools are as well. In some cases there are grants offered to students whose parents wish to send them to a private elementary or high school.
Research Funds are often granted for this purpose, particularly for scientific research in specific areas. For instance, money has been distributed to foundations that are dedicated to discovering new Parkinson ’s disease treatments.
Neighborhood Improvement Several types of local grants are awarded for this purpose. For instance, possibly people wish to help clean up the highways, or they may desire to help improve the streets of a given neighborhood. In some instances donations by way of a grant might be presented to organizations dedication to implementation of projects intended to completely renovate a poor district.
Personal Assistance This might be offered in the form of food stamps, rental assistance, utility vouchers, or home loans. It might also include medical insurance, such as in the case of disabilities or pregnancy.
Job Training This is a program to help all types of workers for different reasons. For instance, one government agency helps help provide additional training displaced workers. This might help people who cannot afford the expense of schooling to find a new job.
Advancement of the Arts Writing, filming, and artistic projects might also be funded as well. Sometimes this requires the donation of the completed project, relinquishing all ownership of it. The money earned from this artistic venture would then maybe in some ways result in increased funds for a non-profit cause or organization.
Residency Programs This is another type of creative grant awarded in the form of room and board. In exchange, the individual would provide some sort of documentary, visual painting, video, or artistic work representative of natural habitats or specific cultural groups. For instance, people are often sent to national parks.
Conservation The preservation of wildlife as well as improvement of water quality is two main concerns. Money is often funded for these reasons to help a community, or even an entire region.
Safety This might include county flood country projects as well as various road improvement causes. It might also involve avocation of new street lights or other safety measures that require additional funding.
Special Requirements
The expectation of grant recipients depends upon the reason that the money is received. Usually the money spent by grantees is meant to benefit the community in some way or to boost the economy. The person is often required to put in a certain amount of time either learning or working in some form or another.
Again, it is important to learn about the guidelines that pertain to each grant applied for, which sometimes requires official non-profit status. This is particularly true in the event one wishes to receive certain research grants.
